Special Caution: Ringless Barrels
Ringless barrels are a joy to play on – they offer a free and open feel, but with this freedom comes responsibility. If you are using a barrel without rings, it is extra important to pay close attention to the fit. Since these lack the protective support of metal or carbon fiber rings, they are much more sensitive to internal pressure. This applies to both the mouthpiece tenon and the tenon on the clarinet’s upper joint. Different mouthpiece and clarinet manufacturers often have slight variations in their measurements. Assembling the instrument should always feel smooth and gentle. If the fit is so tight that you have to use a lot of force to put the parts together, something is wrong. When the wood gets warm and damp during playing, it expands further, and the risk of the barrel cracking becomes extremely high.
How to fix a fit that is too tight:
If the parts fit too tightly, you should never force them together. This can easily be resolved in the following ways:
- Sanding the mouthpiece cork with fine sandpaper
- Sanding the cork on the clarinet’s upper joint
- Careful adjustment of the tenon sockets inside the barrel – this should be done by a professional technician
